Living Off the Land

One of the joys of our little piece of the Earth is the fact we have more room to grow food, raise egg-laying chickens, and find special treats like lots and lots of wild blackberries.

Our neighbors down the road have bees and the best honey we’ve ever eaten. We will definitely be back by their house for more!

Curly spotted this brand-new fawn in the tall grass he was about to cut with the tractor and mower attachment. We all just watched it several minutes and some of us did touch it. The momma did return before nightfall to move her baby! So precious!

Canning Fresh Vegetables

Really. What is not to love? Curly and I canned this afternoon!

photo 1

He made my Granny’s Sour Pickle recipe with his first batch of cucumbers. We’re still waiting on the dill to grow large enough to begin cutting it, so he made the sour pickles. They are yummy!

photo 2

I made a tangy batch of pickled yellow and zucchini squash. They also have onions and peppers in there! I’m just so thankful all of the seals worked! Now we just wait and then we’ll enjoy!

Two of our sons have been finding blackberries around the property. We knew they were here, but they are producing fruit, and we are hopeful to make some blackberry jam later in the season!

I’m beginning to wonder if anyone is out there? 😀 What do you like to make in your kitchen? Please do share in the comments!

Five for Friday {June 13}

fiveforfriday2_thumb3_thumb3I’m linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for Five for Friday this week, and I’m sharing 5 Random Things in no particular order. Come on an link up too!

1. I made business cards for my 3-day trip to Las Vegas soon for the Teachers Pay Teachers conference. I CANNOT WAIT! Besides meeting so many sellers I have become friends with virtually and going to session led by TOP sellers on the site, it will also be a little getaway for the Prez and myself. The last time we went away together was in November 2011 for a 2-night camping trip nearby. We are both excited!!!

lp-1Besides loving my little card, I also ventured into the world of QR codes, and made some for my store and blog. It is the little things that excite me LOL!

2. I celebrated my 41st birthday on June 5. Would you believe this selfie below is the only photo of me on my birthday? It is kind of fitting because I’m never in photos as I’m the one always taking them. I had been out in the POURING rain with our two oldest sons trying to get the chickens fed and making sure they weren’t washing down the hillside!

IMG_0187 IMG_0186Oh, and my eldest son made me pancakes for breakfast, which was so SWEET of him! He is so kindhearted and thoughtful, and he isn’t a bad cook either!

3. I never tire of seeing these little shoes lined up at the back door and taking three little people (and three big people) to the creek with me! We are so blessed to have a creek we can go to and swim in that is clean and relatively safe. I mean, we do see water snakes and an occasional piece of junk that has washed in from somewhere, but it is a great place to play and cool off! We go every afternoon that it isn’t raining!

IMG_0229 IMG_0095 IMG_00284. We have a little country store/restaurant nearby that has catfish on Friday nights, and we go about once every couple of months. It is fun and makes me think of what it might have been like to live in a different time. Life seems so much slower there in a really good way.

IMG_0051 IMG_00505. It is hard to imagine before you go, but I really miss these kids so much (and their caregivers too) in western China. If you ever want to go and visit orphans and meet some of the greatest little children in the world, just ask me how or go {here} and read more about how to go yourself! It is a life-changing experience that you won’t regret!

Summer Reading: Uncovering the Logic of English

In my 10 Things I Want to Do This Summer post, I listed reading a book a week as one of my *things*. I decided today was the perfect day to get started on that, and I honestly have wanted to reread this book for a long time.

photo 5The Prez says he’d rather get his wisdom teeth extracted again (and it wasn’t a good experience) than to read this book, but I do have a degree in English and I find it all rather fascinating. I know I’m weird, like all the other language lovers out there. I think spelling is so MUCH FUN! And honestly, for me, it comes natural. I don’t know why. I do think for some it just does, while for others it doesn’t.

Here’s an excerpt from the second page of the Intro:

The knowledge in this book is as basic to academic success as 1 + 1 = 2.

What to Do on A{nother} Rainy Day?

A). I could cry. Literally a river. As I watch our garden inundated yet again with torrential downpours. Just for reference: here’s is our otherwise lovely creek. Except right now it is swollen and way outside its banks. Bummer!

IMG_0191B). Or I could curl up with a good book like these two, which I have never finished but really want to finish.

IMG_2398C). Or I could attempt to clean up this pile that mocks me every single time I enter our library.

IMG_1935D). Or I could get some long overdue things printed like my new Alphabet Page Protector Printable Set and my fantastic new TpT and Blogging Planning Binder and actually display these Number Posters that I created awhile ago and sell in my TpT store.

IMG_0216IMG_0221IMG_2390E). Or I could try to finally finish up a new product I’ve been working on which involves a candy theme and fact fluency. Here’s a little sneak peak!

photo 2F). Or I could do all of the above! I have done some of these things today and yesterday as the rains have continued to fall and fall and fall.

Let’s see. How did I do? Continue reading

Reading with “My Very Own Name” Book!

I have made it no secret that I LOVE books. Like Deanna, whose blog I’m linking up with, I would much rather buy BOOKS than clothes or shoes LOL! I even aptly named our “school room” a Library, because no one wants to be in the school room when they don’t have to be … but a library, our children go in there even on the weekends to read a good book … and play games, paint, color, draw, relax, do puzzles … you get the idea!

book+linky+buttonToday, though, I want to talk about a particular book. It is unique and not necessarily one you might find on your bookshelf, though I highly recommend it for the special little {and big} ones in your life!

IMG_0077 My mother-in-law found these little gems back in 2008 shortly after we brought Li’l Miss home from China, and at a time when we had just three children! She gave each of her grandchildren one of these personalized books, and they became instant treasures.

IMG_0081To this day, our older sons have their books on a bookshelf for safe keeping, and if they are honest, they look at them every now and then! Since our youngest son wasn’t in our family when Mimi and PopPop gifted these books to their grandchildren for Christmas 2008, he has at times asked about why he doesn’t have one.

IMG_0080I am not proud of the fact that I didn’t suggest this gift sooner, because my mother-in-law was thrilled to get Li’l Bro his VERY OWN “My Very Own Name” book for his birthday, which happens to be TODAY!

IMG_0084He went to the annual Birthday Breakfast with the Grandparents this morning, and he came all smiles with his one-man tent he wished for (thanks to Grammy and Papa) and his “My Very Own Name” book (thanks to Mimi and PopPop). He was also all smiles about his CASH too, but back to the book.

IMG_0076You may be thinking, Ive seen these kinds of books before and they look kind of silly. I know the books you’re thinking of, but these books are high-quality and wonderfully made using animals to tell the story of each child’s birthday! It is SO HARD to find books for children who were adopted older or for whose first day on Earth you really have no knowledge about, but these books are perfect even for a child who was adopted!

The animals begin the book saying:

On {child’s birthday}, the news spread far and wide, “Did you hear?” the creatures said, “A baby boy has arrived!”

Then the animals gather around and talk about how the child needs the “perfect name.” As the child turns each page, another letter from his or her name is added using a different creature each time, such as a jaguar, an anteloupe, and a hippo.

IMG_0075It is the SWEETEST book ever, and it is one-of-a-kind, since each one is uniquely made with the child’s name. I LOVE that Mimi included our children’s full names, which for our adopted children includes part of all of their given Chinese names.

In the front of each book, the purchaser has the option to include a personal message, which Mimi did for each and every one. I highly recommend these books if you are looking for a unique gift and/or just a highly motivating book for your child to read or have read to him or her. The illustrations too are absolutely BEAUTIFUL! While the book doesn’t use real photos, the illustrations are very realistic and place each animal in its own environment.

IMG_0086In the back of the book, there is a glossary of ALL of the animals used by the publisher along with a short description of each animal. These are nicely done as well, and they don’t all include the same basic facts, which adds a nice educational touch!

What are some unique books that have become treasures in your own library? PLEASE comment below and share! You might like to link up too at Deanna’s blog here.

Summer School Plans

It is June, and so we are done with the 2014-2015 school year.
Sounds simple, right?
Not so much.

images-1I have a lengthy to-do list, not so much number of items but more the time involved on some of the line items, including:

  1. Turn in grades and attendance to our cover school by June 15.
  2. MAJOR clean-up in library
  3. MAJOR reconfiguration of *some* areas of our library (namely an area for Li’l Bit that will actually keep her interest and ENGAGE her)
  4. Archive school notebooks/papers/reports I will keep. Throw out what we won’t keep.
  5. Begin planning for next school. I will have a 10th grader, two 3rd graders, and one PK4 student.
  6. Purchase needed curriculum for next year (I’ve already begun this thanks to my TpT success and my PayPal account–thank You Jesus!).

10 Things I Want to Do This Summer

Deanna over at Mrs. Jump’s Class posted a fun linky last week. I read her list and thought it was a great idea, so I’m joining in with my own 10 Things I Want to Do This Summer list.

Summer+linky+button

1. Cook a meal EVERY night. I’ve gotten a bit less intentional about this since my bout with poison ivy and 11 days in China. We have a family of 8 though and going out to eat just isn’t an option very often. I LOVE to eat meat and veggies, as does the fam, so I need to COOK!

IMG_9103Here are some fresh apples just cut up ready to sauté in the skillet with a little olive oil and cinnamon. They were so sweet I didn’t even add any sugar!

IMG_9106I’ve tried plans and charts and calendars. Truth be told, if I get to the store and buy the food, I usually get it done. So yeah, getting to the grocery store might help LOL!

IMG_7030

IMG_9109Speaking of the apples, they were delicious and none were left of course, much to the Prez’s displeasure since he is always hopeful (if rarely indulged) for a leftover plate for work the next day, which brings me to number dos! Continue reading

Reaping What You Sow

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. Galatians 6:7-10

Have you ever been told possibly by a parent, “You reap what you sow.” I know I have more than once, and I’ve said it to our own children.

Our life lessons learned through our Garden Experiment have already begun. The weeds are having a party in our gardens, and we are determined to eradicate them naturally. The blisters between my thumb and forefinger and on the palms of my hand are a reminder to me of the hard work required to reap a bountiful harvest hopefully in due time. I don’t like wearing gloves. I know, it would help with the blisters, but like holding a good book in my hands, I also like to feel the hoe as I work.

The following pictures were taken yesterday of our children’s garden plots from oldest to youngest. We had a torrential downpour the day after we planted this garden, much of which was seeds, so some of the children lost precious seeds down the hillside. But not to despair, some have jumped at the opportunity to plant more seeds, and all but one have worked hard at eradicating those weeds.

For the oldest, he does have some weeds but he has parsley and dill coming up through them, so he is tending them carefully as he strives to not pull out the good stuff while keeping the bad stuff from taking root.

This plot belongs to Curly, 15

Oh, the life lessons! Have you wondered what your heart might look like if you think of it as a flower garden? Would it be full of precious and beautiful blooms, or would it be full of pesky weeds that seem to have no real function other than choking out the precious flowers? Continue reading
