Math Monday: Geometric Shapes & Number Knowledge

Yesterday, we didn’t do much *traditional* school. We instead spent most of the day watching history unfold and watching a documentary about a historic person: Martin Luther King Jr.

Today we were back on our regular schedule, and that involved some math fun.

I would say these pictures don’t need explanation, but Li’l Bit loves these wooden geometric blocks I have. I honestly don’t know when or where I got them, but they are fun and she loves them.

She was playing with them while I read to Li’l Bro and Li’l Miss. She was SO PROUD of her creation. She did this all by herself with no direction from me, and I am quite proud too!

She was quick to point out to me that the one section “do not match” because she didn’t have the right pieces for that one section to match.

After reading, Li’l Bro and Li’l Miss were excited when I told them I had some math work for them to do. First they used their abaci to work the problems on the “Find the Sum or Difference” worksheets.

They did GREAT with this, which was welcome because last week they struggled with it. I made two versions, and this is the one where they struggled last week. You may be able to see that the answer they are looking for is NOT after the equal sign, but one of the addends. If I have them the same exact problem where they are searching for the answer (after the equal sign), no problem but looking for one of the addends and they were confused last week. This week, they were acing it! Li’l Miss even said at one point,”Mommy, this is kind of like subtracting because I’m really subtracting the first number from the last number.”

Eureka, I’ve think she’s got it!. I am so excited they have taken so well to the abacus as well.

I continued using the “What’s That Number?” worksheets with them. They seem to really like this, and I have to say perhaps I should give them worksheets a bit more often. I could easily make more of these with larger numbers as well.

The worksheets they are using are a part of my Penguins Math Unit I have for sale at my TpT store. I hope your Monday (or Tuesday) math has been as fun and engaging! 🙂

I also spent some of my last quarter TpT earnings on a fun little mathtivity for Li’l Bro and Li’l Miss to go along with our penguin fun. They LOVED this, so I’ll be looking for more of these to do from time to time. The set includes several options of math (adding, subtracting, etc.) to complete this picture by coloring the answers according to the corresponding number. Sounds complicated but it wasn’t! They added a few numbers together, and then colored each square a certain color. So, 4+2=6 and should be green. Anyway, here is a picture of Li’l Bro’s finished penguin picture.

More Penguin Fun!

When I mentioned in a post last Monday that our three older brothers were in “special” classes, I kept some information to myself. 🙂 They were actually on a field trip with the Prez in San Antonio. They saw the Alamo, went to a snake park, ate lunch with a large company’s VP and other high-ups (so proud of the report I received on that!), stopped by the Duck Dynasty, and a Civil War battlefield that happens to be in Vicksburg, Mississippi. In addition to all of this, I sent them with assignment sheets, and the reports are that they were actually able to get a lot done in a hotel room. I even heard something like “I was bored so I read a lot of my science book.”

Meanwhile, the three littles and I took advantage of Momma not having as many students this week, and we really had a great time of learning through focusing on penguins. I really need to do more of this themed learning. They really took to it. Ask them about the equator and why it is warm there and not at the poles. Or what type of animal a penguin is, and can they fly? Well, anyway, we learned a lot together. I took a few more pictures and I just had to share. (By the way, I hope to share some pics from the older boys’ adventures with the Prez once I get their photos downloaded from their cameras. Actually, I will be sharing some of their own words hopefully!).

First I have to share this iPhone photo. In another post I shared some ways we are using their new iPods for learning. How about for Bible study? Seriously, they are loving having a copy of God’s Word on their devices.

As for those penguins, we have been getting books from the library slowly. Apparently, others had the same idea! We continued reading today and learned that some penguins live in more temperate climates. I didn’t know that either!

Here they are with another Pint*erest find: Melting Ice Experiment. Which one will melt fastest? 1) Ice in tap water 2) Ice by itself 3) Ice in salt or 4) Ice in sugar.

They LOVED this. I really need to do more experiments.

You are thinking the ice cube in salt right? Everyone they ask says this too, but it wasn’t that cube. And yes, the cubes were all the same size to start.

Li’l Bit was particularly curious about the salt and the sugar. 🙂

We noticed very quickly that one ice cube was melting much faster than the other three.

And that another one was going to most likely melt next.

It was so much fun! Like I said, note to self. Do more of this stuff! No mess even on this one and the payoff was immeasurable in terms of learning and growing.

As we observed, we were hard at work on some other learning activities. We continued using resources from my Penguin Fun Math Unit such as the “Count with the Penguins” interactive math storybook. They loved this too!

After we read about the lonely penguin who ended up with 19 other penguin friends, I gave them the blank lined paper and instructed them to draw a picture. I told them they could then tell me a story about it.

With the Charlotte Mason method, copywork is a huge component. Rather than allowing spelling errors naturally, we much prefer to encourage them to tell their story orally.

I write it out for them as they tell it, and then they copy it in their best handwriting. This way spelling errors are not reinforced, and they are able to focus on the TELLING of the story rather than the mechanics of it.

We are still working on our stories. I encouraged them to use numbers in their stories, and so far I am very impressed!

They begged me to use the number flashcards and matching ten frames again. So I obliged. They did GREAT with this. I sort of wish I would have started using these earlier (the ten frames), but at least I know they are more than ready for them.

I put the number flashcards in as before, but out of order and instructed them to put them in order from least to greatest. They say, “Mom, can we do greatest to least instead?” Um, sure! Seriously. Geniuses I tell ya!

One last activity we completed from the Penguin Unit is the “What’s That Number” half-page sheets. At first, they were not really sure about this. Admittedly, we don’t do a lot of worksheets around here, but I did feel like some remediation and evaluation was in order. When I created this resource, I had assessment in mind with this, and it worked out well.

Math Monday: {Penguin Fun!}

My three youngest students and I have a very special week planned! Our three older students and their brothers are in some special classes this week, so it seemed the perfect week to jump into some “icy” fun with some penguins! 🙂

I noted recently that our two firsties are a bit rusty in their math skills, so some remediation was in order this week. Good news is they don’t think of it much as work! They had so much fun!

We started off our school time with an adorable and very successful Craftivity: Penguin Inkblot Painting. I can’t take credit for the idea. I found it on Pinterest, but you can click HERE to see the link yourself.

Since we covered SYMMETRY last week in our math lessons, this was a great project as we saw symmetry created before our eyes! They were enthralled with seeing this in action and taking part in making it happen. 🙂

Using Ipods for Learning

The Prez was not at all hip on four of our children receiving Ipods for Christmas gifts. The grandparents were ready and willing to go in together and purchase these gifts for four of our children, who had put them on their wish lists. I was ready to make the leap, because I knew unlike so many hand-held electronic devices we could put the Ipod to work for many learning opportunities. Continue reading

Momma’s Been Busy …

… with an idea that I would make gifts for all of our children. *And no, they won’t be reading this post!*

Two are done so far. Well one of these is part of a larger repurposed L -E-G-O table …

… that is not done yet. The table is actually my Mom and Dad’s VERY OLD bedside table. I think it is older than me, maybe? Anyway, my Mom, my sister and I are known for exchanging furniture, and we rarely get rid of things that are solid wood. Hard to find that these days, right? So, I told my Mom I needed a table and/or small cabinet. She said she couldn’t think of anything the right size she had hidden away, but she called me the same day and said, “I happened to talk to your sister, and she has something I think will work.” Sure enough, it will be perfect I think!

Oops, my Mom had a plant on it at one time that leaked. Oh well. I’m painting it (or rather the Prez is painting it) black like two other L.E.G.O. tables we already have. I’ll also be screwing one of these onto the top! I can’t wait to get this done and will be getting started on it this weekend. 🙂

The drawers will give Li’l Bro lots of space ALL HIS OWN for his little creations in progress, and the knobs will be getting a facelift. The Prez happened to find 6 knobs from a previous project we did–perfectly simple, round, nickel-colored knobs. So, this project will cost me a grand total of $15.99–the cost of the extra large baseplate. LOVE!

The book though … which will be wrapped up and hid inside it! … is done.

Math Monday: {Interactive Fraction Cards + Fraction Mini Posters}

I am so excited about this set! I have two firsties who are so excited about understanding fractions more and more. We have been working with pizzas, pies, and even cookies. Even little sister is having fun with her “pizza.”

Now they can practice what they know by matching up cards to one another and/or identifying the fraction when they see it or read it.

I have been working on this set for a long while. I just couldn’t quit adding in fractions and the mini posters just sort of happened! Continue reading

Math Monday: Numbers 1–100

One of our math goals this year for our 1st graders is learning to count to 100 as well as more awareness of number relationships such as counting by twos, by fives and by tens.

I was playing around on my computer one day working on a 1–100 chart. I had found plenty on-line, but none of them looked the way I wanted. I had a vision that the chart I had for our 1st graders would visually convey that all of the 7s numbers such as 7, 17, 27 and so on all end in 7. And the same for 4s and 9s and … well you get the idea. But I could not find one like that.

Living History: Presidential Election 2012

I read it all. I rarely say a word. But this morning, my heart is SICK that a man in our state was re-elected ONLY because of the political party beside his name. He is a doctor, who allegedly* had multiple affairs and finally his wife had enough. They are now divorced. This all happened while he had young children as well. He reportedly asked one of his mistresses to have an ABORTION and yet people in our state re-elected him ONLY because he claims affiliation with a particular party. (*Divorce proceedings will confirm it all officially, but he admitted and multiple women share similar stories.)

This is the type of hypocrisy that I am so WEARY of. What in the world are people thinking?
