Art Appreciation

This summer we will continue with school: math of some sort, writing, reading aloud and independently, being outdoors (science), and ART!

I am LOVING my replenished PayPal account. I am not spending anymore money on school items than I already have, which has not been too bad, except with excess in my PayPal account. I made two large sales this week, so my account is happy (and I am too!).

I had my eye on something at Homeschool Buyer’s Co-op, and so far I’m very happy with the purchase (after having it but 2 hours!).

Untitled

I purchased access to Mark Kistler’s on-line Art videos through the Co-op for just $39.95. You can purchase them at Mark’s site for $99 or for just under $40 at the Co-op. No catches really except an activation fee of less than $2. Oh and you can purchase with PayPal, which as I mentioned is what I did!

Here are some drawings done by my 9-year-old son this afternoon. These were his first time to view the videos.

Untitled
**I might have accidentally gotten sloppy joe sauce on this one while photographing it while eating. Oops!**

Untitled

He is very artistic, but these are amazing to me! Mark encourages the children to add details and make the drawings their own using shadows, backgrounds, and details that are unique.

Needless to say, so far I’m impressed. You can go HERE to read more about Mark’s lessons and to see the amazing deal at the Co-op, which as always is totally FREE to join.

My only problem might be that some people are “fighting” over who gets to the computer next for a video art lesson!

Meanwhile, I had my sights set on some Draw Write Now books, particularly Book 2 and Book 3, but I didn’t want to spend $10 a book.

To my amazement, I found the two I wanted on e*bay for LESS THAN half of regular price for one book (for both books!) and they are LIKE BRAND NEW. I got them today, just two days after winning the bid (no one else wanted them which was to my advantage!). 🙂

Untitled

As I predicted, my two 1st graders … well, as of tomorrow June 1st … couldn’t wait to open them up and start drawing. What I didn’t expect was the excitement over writing as well as drawing! Last year’s copywork lessons have reaped some big fruit including patience from my little almost-graduated kindies!

Untitled

These go along with the history time period we’ll be studying this year as a family, so I’m excited to find them so cheap! (In the back, they do have an *extra* section, which is where Li’l Bro found the airplane instructions.) 😉

Here’s to Happy Drawing this summer!

Planning … and Planning … and Planning

All of you teachers out there know what kind of planning I am talking about.

School plans.

Today was productive at FedEX*Office today. I had a great helper, Larry a tag-along, Li’l Bro, who sat on the floor with the iPod in hand and acted superbly, and a little girl on my back, who didn’t make a sound until we were almost finished. Like I said, very productive.

Untitled

That would be a pic of 8 notebooks spiral-bound and ready to go:
• Curly’s Math 5-A-Day Notebook with 150 5-A-Day Blank Problem pages ready for me to fill out and graph and notebook filler paper at the end for working out problems requiring such.

• Larry’s Math 5-A-Day Notebook with 150 5-A-Day Blank Problem pages ready for me to fill out and graph and notebook filler paper at the end for working out problems requiring such.

Here is a picture of the 5-A-Day template I made. This is how our math program works. Each day I give the older boys 5 problems. It is a continual review of problem types they have mastered as well as those they need to continue practicing in order to reach mastery. For those they have mastered, I might not give them that type of problem but once every 3 weeks or even less.

**Oh and this is the LEFTIE template I made. :)**

• Mo’s Math 5-A-Day Notebook with 150 5-A-Day Blank Problem pages ready for me to fill out and graph and notebook filler paper at the end for working out problems requiring such.

**Do you have a leftie at your house? If so, he or she probably doesn’t care for spiral notebooks. I found a solution. I made the gutter on the RIGHT side and had the spiral put on the RIGHT side. I have a VERY HAPPY leftie tonight!**

• Larry’s Copywork Book with 50 pages of handwriting paper for a Bible verse to be done each morning IN CURSIVE. They will be using a Master book to copy from that I made last year, and the pages I used to make their books came from the DonnaYoung site (horizontal 2-4 template).

• Mo’s Copywork Book with 50 pages of handwriting paper for a Bible verse to be done each morning IN CURSIVE.

• Li’l Bro’s Copywork Book with 68 pages to fill full of manuscript print on Animals We Know and Love along with some mazes and pictures to color as well! (This is the 2nd of a 3-book series done by Lighthome Publications, and I highly recommend them and buy them through CurrClick (totally non-consumable so we will use again with baby girl; we used this one for littles and this one for two middle boys this past year).

• Li’l Miss’s Copywork Book with 68 pages to fill full of manuscript print on animals from A to Z along with some mazes and pictures to color as well! (same one as her brother).

and finally …

• Li’l Bit’s Copywork Book with 25 pages from Donna Young’s site (the PreK-K template). I should note that I don’t WANT her to necessarily do copywork, but she WANTS to do what the others are doing so I figured she should have a little book. It will be a nice keepsake!

On my to-do list:

• Continue finding used copies (or cheap copies) or our reading list books for history (about halfway there).
Untitled

• Adjust Daily Schedules for older boys (and print out several copies in their family color).
• Put together syllabi for older boys for Science and Language.
• Put together loose reading plans for Li’l Bro and Li’l Miss and math lessons for the next quarter. (Li’l Miss is really reading well; need to keep working with her {note to self}.
• Hmmm … keep PURGING schoolroom of things we don’t use/don’t need/need to throw away/give away/etc.

That should do it for now. I’m tired!

Oh and I’m posting a pic of the FRONT SIDE of Mo’s weekly schedule as a few people may be coming here to see what they look like (that asked me for a picture). I make these for Curly and Larry as well. I should note I print Curly on orange, Larry on blue, Mo on green … family colors extend to school as well!

Has Anyone Seen Me?

🙂 🙂 🙂

I am not gonna lie.
I will be glad to say adios to May.

It is just busy and school is still going … and we will keep plugging away but as the pool at Papa’s House gets warmer … we’ll be motivated to get it done by lunch.

I am also not gonna lie.
I spoke too soon when I {might have} bragged that our new little 2-year-old didn’t bother anything or do any typical 2-year-old toddling and tooling about.
In things like school supplies, scissors {oh my}, food cabinets and bags of cheez-its ALL OVER THE FLOOR. Continue reading

Anybody Else Coming Up for Air?

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE cheering our children on in their various efforts, but, PHEW.

The last month has been C-R-A-Z-Y  B-U-S-Y with classes ending and end-of-year programs and such.

I am now gleefully checking things off of our list of things we do, particularly classes some or all of our children have completed or that are in (or will soon) break until September. (For my own recording purposes, I am noting days/times and participants.)

• 4H {All}–Check! (Third Wednesday monthly Sept–May)*

• Junior Achievement {Larry and Mo}–Check! (Every other Tuesday afternoon Sept–April)

Larry and Mo had a great time at the BizTown event in Nashville. Larry was a Mail Delivery employee and Mo was a Chief Financial Officer for the Pet Store.

• Children’s Bible Drill {Larry and Mo}–Check! (Sunday nights Sept.–May)

Both of them both finished strong at the State Meet. Larry answered all 24 questions correctly and received a State Superior Award, while Mo answered 21 questions correctly and received a State Winner Award.

I wish I could say I have photos but I don’t. I do have a really good excuse, but you’ll have to trust me on that.

• Church Choir (and Spring Musicals) {Larry, Mo, Li’l Bro, Li’l Miss}–Check! (Sunday nights Sept.–May)

Mo had another solo part this time, though without words. Still he rocked it out literally in the Blues band, even dancing on the stage with his harmonica!

DSC_0684

DSC_0685

DSC_0688

DSC_0687

Mo was also chosen to demonstrate a sample Bible Drill this past Sunday morning prior to the Church Musical. He was very excited to be chosen, though he told me on Saturday afternoon: “When Ms. Ashley called my name to stay after practice, I was a little worried I might be in trouble at first.” I said, “Did you have any reason to be worried?” He giggled and said, “Well, mostly, no, but I wasn’t perfect during practice either.” At least he was honest.

Larry chose to opt out, but his Choir Director informed him she would have a back-stage job for him next time he decides not to sing. 🙂 We do allow the boys to opt out of the Spring Musical, though they are still required to go to the practices, as Church Choir is their music class and they have wonderful teachers. I was so glad though that Ms. Jennifer encouraged him that she “needs everyone even if they are behind the scenes.” I think he kind of enjoyed her noticing his absence and suggesting she had a job for him even if he didn’t want to sing.

The little ones performed on Sunday evening, while Mo performed on Sunday morning.

• Community Bible Study {All}–Check! (Friday mornings Sept.–May)

• Youth Bible Drill {Curly}–Check! (Sunday nights Sept.–May)

Curly finished up at the Youth State Drill on Saturday along with an 8th grader from our church. He was in a field of tough competition, but he still completed 23 out of 25 drills. He hopes to go back to the State Level in the Youth Division next year, which will be his 5th year in Bible Drill.

IMG_2313

As May continues, we will wrap up Ballet for Li’l Miss on Thursdays, which will culminate with her Spring Recital on May 29.

Have I mentioned that Papa already opened his pool, and the 5 oldest have been IN it? I have dipped my toes in it. The weather has been very warm, but the water is still in the 60s to 70s. Too cold for this Momma, except in an emergency!

IMG_2319

IMG_2318

Grammy decided Li’l Bit needed her own little pool, but she likes to have company.

IMG_2305

And speaking of Grammy, she has found that one way to her littlest granddaughter’s heart is a pop-ice … or two.

IMG_2315

During the summer, we will continue with:

• Speech Therapy for Li’l Bro and Li’l Miss two hours each week (day and time TBD; one hour each individual)

• Boy Scouts on Thursday evenings for Curly

• Taekwondo for all of the boys on Tuesdays and Thursdays (though we may go on some alternate days/times), along with my assistants who take photos and videos for me.

I am also thankful for medical appointments that are done with good reports and for medical surgeries that have been postponed (I’ll share more on that down below).

On May 1st, The Prez and I took Larry, Li’l Bro and Li’l Miss for their annual cardio appointments. The news was excellent!

Li’l Miss is doing very well, and the doctor does not want to see her until next May unless we notice significant changes.

Li’l Bro is doing very well, and the doctor found no changes in his aneurysm from last year, which is really great news. He does not want to see him until next May either. He also did an annual echo on Li’l Bro and found no reason to replace his valve anytime in the near future. The longer we can wait on this, the less open-heart surgeries he will endure.

Larry is doing very well, so well, in fact, the doctor does not want to see him for TWO years. He reiterated how well his heart surgery was done in China, how sick he had been with an infection in his heart, and how amazing his language has come along given his age at adoption and heart defects (which commonly affects language processing).

Really, we are praising God for these wonderful reports on their hearts. We do NOT take these good reports lightly as there are just no guarantees, but we are so grateful for their good health.

Next week, Li’l Bro heads back to the audiologist for another adjustment on his BAHA. He also will continue having regular hearing evaluations as the last one in April showed moderate hearing loss in his “good” ear. Kind of not-so-good news, but the audiologist feels each new test is a better representation. She commended his maturity since the last test and was certain it was a valid reading this last time.

In other medical news for Li’l Bro, I am SO HAPPY to report his surgery scheduled for May 16 has been MOVED to August 22. You may wonder why in the world I am happy about this? Well for several reasons, but for starters, I didn’t want to do it and didn’t have any peace about it. He was scheduled to have a nose revision, where the Dr. would take cartilage from his ribs to place in his nose. Not only does this procedure involve a lot of pain usually, but it also comes with a Dr’s order of NO SWIMMING for “at least 6 weeks.”

Seriously. I also felt like this surgery was going to put a big, red STOP sign in his amazing progress in speech. And for what? Basically a COSMETIC surgery. Yes, it is needed eventually but it is certainly not necessity in the near future.

But the best part about it all is that a very dear friend was able to TAKE our time slot for her daughter’s surgery, which had been originally scheduled for June 20 … about the time she is projected to be on a plane to China to bring back her precious waiting 2-year-old son.

I told the Dr.’s Scheduler, who is a real gem and happens to be a Christ-follower as well: “You know the fact we have this May 16 date is NOT a coincidence?” And she says, “I know. I know.” This all happened last week, and I am just SO THANKFUL it worked out for our friend to get the date. It all worked out so perfectly, and none of us have any doubt that God worked this all out!

Medical Recap:
• June 15: Li’l Bit’s Heart Cath (exploratory and interventional if he finds collaterals)
• August 22: Li’l Bro’s Nasal Revision Surgery

Amidst all of the STUFF, we have managed to find some time on a few evenings to take a ride around the neighborhood with our 5 bike riders and 1 stroller rider! I will have to share in another post all about our newest independent bike riders!

IMG_2290

And what do you do with all of those lids of various colors? Do you throw them away? Yeah, I used to as well, but they are GREAT for sorting, exploratory play and keeping a little student wannabe busy for a good 20 minutes with supervision of course.

*We will also continue caring for the 26 chicks we have, that are growing by INCHES it would seem each day. As I type, we are preparing to move them to their permanent home at Grammyland. See next post. 🙂

Math@Our House: Counting by 10s // “Less Than” // 1/4

The littles and I have been continuing with our Monday morning math lessons. They love to learn. It is almost too easy. I have said in the past I’ll ride this joy train as long as it lasts … because some of the other students here might GROAN audibly before their math lesson.

I have added another component to our calendar time. I use this beautiful calendar from Sarah’s Covenant Homes and our friends, the F Family, to ask the littles questions, like “Point to where it says what month it is” or “Point to the day on the calendar.” I figure they need to also be able to read an actual calendar. We have it hanging up now, and I love the Scriptures in it and the photos of the beautiful children.

Our New “Babies” Are Here!

DSC_0556

I’ll let the pictures mostly speak.

DSC_0562

DSC_0550

Our baby chicks (and one baby rooster … see him in the pic below with the white spot on his head)

DSC_0549

… are here. And I am in a little bit of shock. What was I thinking???

DSC_0546

DSC_0551

I will say I got some Momma points when I fashioned a brooder from the two large boxes the Prez had brought home.

DSC_0566

The expert at our local 4H office, where we picked up our “babies” today, told me our box was too deep and we needed a brooder about 4 times that size … so when we came home I started cutting the top half off of each of the two boxes and taping and cutting sides … and before long we had a brooder 4 times larger and half as deep. 🙂

DSC_0551

DSC_0571

Mo was doubtful but quite impressed once I finished. Curly gladly loaned me his very sharp pocket knife and helped with the cutting too.

The pics include only Li’l Miss because I was too in shock at first to worry with the camera, and by the time I headed back to the shop with it Li’l Miss was the only one still interested except Mo.

But he was back at Grammy and Papa’s house working on “The Chicken Mansion.”

To Be Continued … hopefully …

A {Proverbial} Day in My Life: Installment 1

I thought this might be fun.
I put “proverbial” because the photos were not all taken on 1 day, though all have been taken this week.

🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

Here we go.

One night the Prez was trying to figure out which prescription ointment went with which skin ailment, he decided a Sharpie was what we needed.

In the last couple of months, we’ve had staph infections of varying natures. Mo struggles with on-going staff infections. Long story short, he got an MRSA infection on his finger from an infected splinter wound, and has had bouts with it ever since.

They tend to crop up mostly on his face and other unmentionable places … ahem.

So, now the Prez has his own staph infection cream. And we have some eczema cream. And some itch cream. And even cream for folliculitis.  Oh and how could I forget the cream that we are supposed to put around Li’l Bro’s BAHA site 3 times a day. What? Did I mention the BAHA has already gone back for a repair–because it keeps falling off. Yeah. Not good. Back to the ointments.

DSC_0448

While taking said photo, I thought it would be fun to snap a photo of my “retreat.”

LAUGHING OUT LOUD!

DSC_0453

When we bought this house more than 11 years ago now, we loved the jacuzzi tub in the {then} spare downstairs master suite. A few years ago, we moved to the downstairs master and renovated the bath, but we kept the tub. Isn’t it neat?

Except now the edge that I envisioned surrounded by candles and whatnots is instead cluttered with Aquafor Baby Wash, Kids’ 2-n-1 Body & Hair Wash, a basket of bath toys, and ONE LONE candle. 🙂

And our small drawer for toothpaste and brushes … is FULL to overflowing. 🙂

DSC_0449

Instead of running upstairs with the three littles for tooth brushing, it is just easier to take care of this in our downstairs bath. So I have quite the array of toothbrushes too … some of which {might} need to be replaced.

DSC_0451

We do have another half-bath downstairs but most of us don’t go in there … the boys tend to use it … and well, enough said. If we know company is coming, it gets cleaned and the fear is put into said boys to GO UPSTAIRS. Thank you.

But you know, even with my “quiet retreat” no longer so quiet or retreatish, I wouldn’t change a thing. One of these days, I’ll look for one of those little toothbrushes and wonder where all of the little people who claimed them are … and they will be too big to use Momma’s bathroom anymore (as our 3 big boys have become). So it is all good.

I just want to remember.

Sniff, sniff.

OK, moving on to today. I snapped some photos here and there. I really should have taken one of the laundry room, but honestly it is always the same. Lots of clothes needing washed, others needing sorted for giving away, yet more awaiting stain management, and still more that need to be taken to the living room for sorting and folding and finally, putting away.

And have I mentioned before that our two oldest boys do ALL OFF their laundry. Mo mostly does, though he has been known to slip more than a few articles of his clothing into our community laundry bins in the laundry room where mine, the Prez and the littles clothes are sorted. While I’m talking laundry, I do have a three-compartment laundry sorter, so that when I do wash it is already sorted by whites, lights and darks. Even the littles know how to sort, of which I am quite proud.

I will add a photo of my laundry room because it seems everyone is doing it LOL and I think I want to remember what it was like … when someday I’m not doing laundry for 8. 🙂

But today I snapped the following photos just as I walked by various stuff.

DSC_0478
Someone always has shoes laying somewhere. No matter how easy we make it to PUT THEM AWAY please. Did you know that at any given time we could have a pile of 16 shoes … if everyone left theirs laying out?

DSC_0477
How about that? Stuff that STILL NEEDS to be put away from our China Trip … that we arrived home from almost 2 months ago.

DSC_0479

And this. Our living room always looks like this in one way or another. Stuff. Out. Actually the small pile of laundry you see there is NOTHING. It is usually a MOUNTAIN. Only reason it is not is because it is all awaiting my attention. Can y’all tell I have a preoccupation obsession fear of the laundry?

Amidst the taking care of stuff like laundry, we do manage to get a fair bit of schooling done each day. I choose to look at the big picture. 😉

But here are some views from today in our school … with a little explanation.

Li’l Miss found a caterpillar and we decided to cage the creature to see if he/she would show us metamorphosis. To our delight {and my surprise}, he/she has made a cocoon (we think it is a moth in a cocoon rather than a butterfly in a chrysalis). We shall see.

DSC_0454

The creature is in the white cocoon/chrysalis on the back of the habitat. And we have another one in there of the same variety who appears to be favorable for metamorphosis as he/she is eating like crazy (they do this right before going in their cocoon/chrysalis) and also has developed an affinity for the ceiling of the habitat.

And here are some photos {from yesterday} when we found the second little caterpillar, who as I mentioned above is now in the habitat as well.

DSC_0400

DSC_0413

And someone did cry again because she wanted to HOG the creature and not share. Sorry Grammy but she has to learn to share, and she didn’t cry for long because one of her big brothers scooped her up … have I mentioned how spoiled she is by her 3 biggest brothers?!?

DSC_0398

“Mommy, he is getting too close to my face!”

DSC_0428

Note that Li’l Bit didn’t mind this little guy crawling ALL OVER HER. She loved it in fact. He is crawling on her shirt and then crawls all the way around her back to the front again!

DSC_0424

DSC_0423

I don’t know who is cuter … the caterpillar or the baby girl!

DSC_0438

OK, it is the baby girl but isn’t he a cute little caterpillar? And he was so kind to them!
At this point, she is getting mad because I’m telling her she has to let Sissy have another turn with the caterpillar.

Moving on to other scenes from today (or one day this week). Curly is working on the Fly Fishing Merit Badge and used his own money he had been saving to buy himself a fly fishing rig. He practices every single day. And is researching like crazy for it. I’m very proud of him.

DSC_0391

DSC_0392

DSC_0395

Speaking of Curly, I have been after him to keep practicing speed typing skills. He has not been honoring his mother in this request. So the other night, he came and found me on the couch on my laptop and asked “what in the world are you doing?” I was typing away and my palms were sweating and I was saying “DON’T SAY A WORD! I am taking a typing test!”

He may have laughed out loud at me.

After I finished my speed test (and got 71 WPM–oh yeah!), his curiosity was peaked. SUCCESS. You see, that was my plan all along. He attempted to take the test and did very poorly.

He said forget it, but I said “Let me ask you a question.” He says “OK.” I say, “Son, what if you have the job as a designer at LEGO in Denmark all but wrapped up, but the interviewer says ‘Oh, by the way, you do know how to speed type right?'”

He looks at me, rolls his eyes, and says, “Where are the lessons on that site you were telling me about a minute ago?”

SUCCESS. I found him at the computer at one point today taking a typing lesson.

DSC_0486

And in other events today, I took some photos from math lessons with the littles … Yes all three as one certain little was on my back! {Yes I’m wearing her more and she is loving it, and if she is whining, wearing her for half an hour or so always does the trick.}
And no, she doesn’t always have her bottle … but she does have it sometimes. Like after breakfast, before nap, maybe one more in the late afternoon, and of course one before bed. Thing is though, she eats GREAT and a lot and is gaining weight .. and to be honest, I give her almond milk and water it down a bit … so it is all good. And she likes her bottle and that makes Momma happy.

And I suppose Momma is partly to blame for the spoiling too huh?!

OK, back to the actual math lesson.

Making addition equations while reading Hershey’s Addition book.

DSC_0456

DSC_0457

And a little follow-up copywork in their math notebooks.
DSC_0461

Next up was a fractions lesson with Larry. Have I mentioned … yeah, I have. Fractions with Larry is kind of like getting one’s teeth pulled without any pain management. 🙂

DSC_0466

I told him we’d use 10 of the “Game” cards and see who wins–me or him. If he gets the correct answer, he keeps the card. If not, Momma gets the card. Fair enough.

DSC_0468
Do you see the question?

“Son, remember, if the numerator is the same, and the denominator is different, the one with the smaller denominator is ALWAYS LARGER IN SIZE. Remember, like cutting a pizza in slices?”

“OH, yeah, definitely. I remember.”

“OK, then, let’s play.”

Please note that I also allowed him the use of manipulatives (thanks M!).

DSC_0467

About that card above?
Yeah, Momma got that card.

And promptly did this, to which Joel laughed hysterically and wanted a photo to document the moment.
DSC_0471

Back to the fraction game.

DSC_0474

“Ah, I get it now, Mom, 1/3 really is larger than 1/6. I see it now that I’m holding it in my hand.”

And the final score: Larry, 6 // Momma, 4.
He won. Sort of. I think.

As for me, I decided I might need some more coffee, which by the way I never got.

A Post A Day: Math at Our House

I have discovered since I began teaching our children 2 years ago that I actually *like* math.

I always thought I *strongly disliked* math.

I may have used the *H a _ _* word in place of strongly dislike above. On more than one occasion. Maybe.

But as we’ve taken an approach to math that to some might be a bit too relaxed, I have discovered math is actually fun!

Fun?! Yes.

I bought this curriculum at the homeschool expo two years ago. We shelved it mostly last year after using it exclusively the first year of homeschooling. It can be a bit intimidating to a former math hater like me.

But. Big but. It is an amazing resource. And the more I use it, the more I love it.

Besides, I now know what a prime number is. And a composite number for that matter.
And after a lesson one night with Daddy, the big boys all have a solid grasp of this as well.

For Curly, it was total review which was great because he sometimes struggles with retaining math concepts. Larry had a really hard time with it, but I had to wonder if language was not a big factor in that.

DSC_3012

I spent quite a bit of time the past few weeks figuring out exactly where everyone is in terms of math mastery … or not.

Our three oldest are all at different places, thus they all have notebooks with our teaching goals typed out separately: what concepts to review, which ones they have mastered, etc.
IMG_0928

Mo and Larry can be taught a lot of concepts together, but Mo has more experience in some concepts while Larry in others.
IMG_0931

Curly needs more than either of them can handle at this point. I do keep all of the teaching times for new concepts to 30 minutes tops, and 15 minutes being the goal.

After that, eyes begin to glaze over anyway.

One of the neatest components to Math on the Level is the 5-A-Day papers. I have created my own template, which was inspired by several other ladies’ templates they shared on a MOTL yahoo group.
IMG_0932

It is working out quite well. Instead of 10,000 multi-digit multiplication problems, I can give them a few a day or one a week or whatever I feel is warranted. If they are consistently answering a type of problem correctly, I can be assured they have mastered that concept. No need for 10,000 multiplication problems.

I also gleaned another idea from the ladies at the MOTL yahoo group: a math notebook which travels with the student from year to year. The beauty behind it is it becomes a sort of reference tool. Not only that, as I teach a new concept, I encourage the older boys to take notes. This helps them not only hear the message, but they are writing it out as well. They can also refer back if they forget or get confused.

Of course my kindergartners wanted their own math notebooks, so I obliged. I decided to give them a lesson in math the other day using the unifix cubes.

We were counting and comparing and talking about more than and less than.
DSC_3021

Li’l Miss compares two towers and says, “These are the same!”
And I thought to myself, yes they are, and in math we call that equal. I wrote the word on the board and then showed them the = symbol.
DSC_3019

They both wrote that in their notebooks.
DSC_3026

It got better though. Li’l Miss picks up a stack of 3 cubes and 7 cubes and clicks them together. Then she stands the stack next to a stack of 10 cubes.  And says, “Look, Mom, these are EQUAL!”

I was very proud of her! I asked her to count them and she did. 1-2-3. 1-2-3-4-5-6-7. Then I showed her how to use the = sign to say this.

3+7=10

She was so excited. She then started making towers from 1 cube to 10 cubes and putting them in order.

Li’l Dude was quite happy to be done with math after the = sign and begin building airplanes from the unifix cubes, which was cool too!

Another day we used our Education Cubes with the 1–20 inserts and rolled the dice.
DSC_2994

I asked them to say the number and then put the 4 dice in order from least to greatest.
