The week before we left for our beach trip, Li’l Bit spent a week focusing on the Letter I. The week was filled with learning more about insects including ladybugs and bees, which was perfect as we studied pollination with big brother and big sister.
Who knew painting rocks into ladybugs and bees would be so FUN?! After going on a nature hike to find just the perfect smooth stones, Li’l Bit took her time putting on several coats of paint and adding just the right details.
Li’l Bit also enjoyed making her “Ladybug Numbers” while her big sis and big bro made skip counting ladybug numbers. Most often if it involves numbers, I can individualize for each of my younger students, two of whom are in 3rd grade and of course Li’l Bit, who is 4 and in PreK.
She first outlined her numbers with a red marker, next she colored the inside with a red crayon, she added black spots that equaled the number, and finally she exercised those finger muscles as she cut out each number! I put them all on a clip ring for one-to-one activities! She was very proud of doing this one all by herself!
She loves books and we have no shortage here. I put several books in her book bin about insects and we also read about the plagues in Egypt that the Lord sent when Pharaoh wouldn’t let the Israelites leave captivity there. Her favorite book this week and one of her all-time favorites: The Very Hungry Caterpillar. I still change the word cocoon to chrysalis when I read it though no matter what its author says about why he chose the word cocoon to describe what a butterfly caterpillar makes.
We still have a few insects flying around here and we saw some bees acting a little hyper! They tend to do this when we have a few warm days in the fall, and they seem to sense they have come out at the wrong time! She loves using the “maglifier” to look in books. I picked up this old Golden Book of Insects at a library book sale, and it has pencil sketches in it! It is also like brand-new. LOVE!!! She loves it too!
While her big brother and sister worked on their Botany notebooks after we took apart a rosebud, Li’l Bit decided to make a collage page of flower petals. This one lone rose bud had more than 30 petals on it! Who knew?
I had planned for her to do this little toucan paper craft from Keeping Life Creative when we studied Letter T, but I forgot about it. We talked about how toco toucans eat a lot of insects and read a little about the toucan while she colored her toucan and then glued it all together by herself using the photo we found as a guide.
Lastly, she loved working with a new resource I’ve created: Halloween Numbers 1-10.
She used actual pumpkin seeds to add the different cards together and find the correct answer! She LOVES to add numbers, and even though she is only 4 and in PreK we let her do this in fun and interactive ways. It is always optional, but this day she didn’t want to quit this activity!
I’d love to give away this resource to one of my readers. Here’s what we’ll do. If you’d like to enter for a chance to win, please add your email to my newsletter subscriber button on the top of my sidebar. I will NOT share these emails and will use them only to send you my new monthly newsletter coming out in November.
BE SURE to let me know in the comments you’ve signed up using the same email addy that you used for the newsletter, so I can verify it. I will keep this open for one week, so the winner will have to time to use it the week of Halloween. Please note there are no witches in this little resource, only pumpkins, candy corns and candy! PLEASE share about this chance to win a free resource by linking back here. If you do, let me know that too in a comment and I’ll add your name twice to the drawing.
